CENTRAL COAST VETERINARY CLINIC

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

FES therapy has been used in human medicine for decades in the treatment of spinal cord injury patients. This technology mimics the signal the brain sends to motor neurons to cause the contraction of muscle. This type of stimulation is referred to as 'functional' because unlike other electrical stimulation systems, FES works on the motor neuron rather than only the sensory nerves. Through initiating the motor pathway, FES can be used to treat both muscle spasms and muscle atrophy ultimately restoring function and alleviating pain.

CCVC is excited to be one of the few providers to be certified to provide FES therapy on the west coast.
